The New York Times gave its best to an award given to Mr. Green in 2009 by a group of people called the Center for the Study of Black Families. The Center, which was set up by a Chicagoan in his 60s, now has about 130 members in 37 states, with another 25 or so participating in New York as part of a larger group of "black/diverse" organizations.

At the time, the Times said the award reflected some of the challenges faced by African-Americans in higher education and said that if anyone who had worked for the newspaper had a comment on what had gotten so wrong, it was that "the best things are being said about Mr. Green, yet he is ignored."

A few months later, the magazine ran a cover story about Dr. Bischoff, calling him a "godsend of mental health treatment" because of his "depth-finding approach to studying black communities."

The cover story, "How The World Looks," was met with criticism. Dr. Bischoff wrote back and was not disappointed. The Times said in a statement, "In his career, Dr. Bischoff has been recognized by professional organizations worldwide as an expert on black-white mental health" and that "Dr. Bischoff's clinical work on Black and Minority Studies has produced important contributions to black studies."

"Black folks just don't understand," said Dr. Bischoff, who has been in New York for decades. "We don't have it. We need to get that."

Dr. Green did not respond to requests for an interview, but a copy of a letter he sent to the Times and a statement on his web site confirmed his claim that he had been "denied the chance to serve in the Times" after the Times declined his entry to what had been considered a prestigious honor.
